1940

In August, those who would come from the 1901 location down the street made it to the house.

A month later (and just one week before a surely most amazing inaugural Halloween party) another article boasted of a stable presence with profits of a whopping $351.

John followed the Amigo Club from the 1901 University Ave SE location to its new home at 1721 University Ave SE. Arthur joined in 1940 and would remain a member until graduation in 1944.

Thanks to the research of co-oper Charles Lehnen, we can see what the scene must have been like in the first year:

This all seems to tell us Students’ Co-op co-founder Curtis Kinikin went on to another co-op called Mens Cooperative Club; a co-oper we know about Mike E. Majetich was not just a member of the house but also president of a larger group called University Cooperative Club, which seems to be some kind of social mixer for the co-ops; and women (“coeds”) involved in the co-operative movement that formed the Amigo Club are still involved in the house through the selfsame social mixers.

In the lower right of this page from The Gopher we get a rare glimpse of Joseph Chock Lum Tam and other early members “airing their tonsils” to piano in the living room of the house | courtesy U of M archives

There must have been some sadness in the house when the Pearl Harbor reports were coming in during the holidays, forcing Joseph Tam’s home land Hawai’i to suddenly be under threat and under U.S. imperial rule, besides! (Although actual Statehood would not be voted in for several years.) The next year, Tam joined dental fraternity Delta Sigma Delta, and other Tams from Hawai’i followed in his footsteps in subsequent years, though none joined the co-op.

The last Feigal of the 1939 cohort who lived in both Amigo Club locations leaves with graduation, entrusting the continuation of the co-op to those who remain, a tradition of cooperative enterprise it seems. Several Feigals (likely his own brothers) keep moving in for years to come.

1943

Since the beginning, many of the men were athletes and particularly enjoyed intramural (or IM) competition, where Amigo Club sometimes represented prized players.

Intramural report of 1943 | From The Gopher 1944

However, despite pacifist arguments being present on campus and even socialist guests giving speeches in auditoriums, the war and the draft were threats. The Gopher reported the draft law “hit the junior class” the hardest since seniors were usually deferred and the younger students were not typically included.

When I enrolled at the U of M in the fall of 1943 the tuition was $15 per quarter; which works out to $45 per year. During that first quarter at the U of M, I stayed at the “Amigo Club” located at 1721 University Ave. S.E. The charge for room and board was $40 per month. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to finish that first quarter as Uncle Sam wanted me for service in the Army Air Corps.

When I returned to the University after my time in the service under the GI Bill, the University was allowed to charge returning veterans out of state tuition, and that charge came to $56 per quarter. To help pay the costs for that first quarter of going to the University I had a part-time job as a Street Car Conductor on the Como Harriet Line. Street Cars, of course, disappeared a long time ago.

Meanwhile, in the women-only co-operative cottages, there was a lot reported too.

1944

The Gopher highlighted a strong presence of women at the University.

Gamma Delta a co-ed Lutheran group held meetings at the Students’ Co-op

RT Ravenholt, a “shirt-tail relative” of the last Midland Co-operatives representative at the house, is passed the business operations mantle. This signifies the last “letting go” of the Co-op’s founding sponsor Midland Co-operatives, presumably entrusting the members to run themselves. According to the research of Jim Jones, M.D. “Doc” Zeddies would help with University co-ops for years to come, though he primarily focused on Independent Mens Co-operative on St. Paul campus (which would eventually become the five-house co-ed “Minnesota Students Co-op”).

1945

The Gopher 1946 continued to focus more on the women’s organizations of the year. For example, besides the women’s cooperative cottages (which the women defended from destruction by the University), there were things like “All-University Committee against Peacetime Conscription” an anti-draft group run by Mary Muedeking.

We have just a few glimpses of the actual members of the Amigo Club at the time.

According to the research of co-oper Charles Lehnen, we also have evidence that the Students’ Co-op was petitioning for recognition and direct engagement with the University. An audit of their operations probably began this year or the next.

1946

Of this year, we know little of Amigo Club affairs from The Gopher, except that co-oper John Kay Adams is credited as a “Grey Friar” (Honorary Senior Man) and is pictured as part of the staff of the college paper The Minnesotan (which apparently boasts the world’s largest college circulation).

Gil Dammann, resident in Summer 1947 | by Gil Dammann

The year was 1947, the season was late summer and my age was 25 years. My good friend Wally Ashauer and I were roommates at the Amigo Club, an inexpensive student’s co-op at 1721 University Ave. S.E. in Minneapolis.

It was summer break-time and we were on college vacation. Wally and I had met a Mexican engineer named Jorge Rascon at the Amigo Club during the war. He stayed at the Club while studying at the University of Minnesota during a summer quarter. He had invited us to visit him in Mexico City after the war and we decided to do just that before the fall quarter began […]

1948

Some time in the 1946-1949 academic years, the Students’ Co-operative, Inc. became a founding member of an organization called North American Student Co-op League, which sounds an awful lot like a precursor to NASCO but a couple decades ahead of time. My suspicions were confirmed by University of Michigan records:

The North American Student Cooperative League (NASCL) was founded in 1946 with the assistance of the Cooperative League of the U.S.A. Growing out of the cooperative movement begun on various college campuses in the late 1930s, NASCL was the amalgamation of several regional associations. Never a strong organization, leaders in the cooperative movement in the 1960s began stressing the need for change and redirection. A more effective organization was needed, one that would be more than a clearinghouse of information, and would instead engaged in programs of education and legislative lobbying.

In the spring of 1968, participants in a conference sponsored by the University of Michigan Inter-Cooperative Council proposed the organization of a group “for the purpose of expanding the cooperative movement across college campuses.” In the fall, a group gathered in Chicago to organize the National Association of Students of Cooperation (NASCO) intended to succeed NASCL. NASCO’s creation in 1968 meant that, for the first time in 20 years, student co-ops would begin working together towards their common interests.

Well, if it was not strong, it must have surely been exciting, because the Co-op was reportedly proud:

Three rare glimpses at the Amigo Club! What looks like a typical card game somewhere in the clearly non-non-smoking house; interesting curtains elsewhere and multiple confirmations of the 1948 membership | Courtesy The Gopher 1949 in U of M archives
Here is a closer pic and more accurate spelling of Walter Jaakkola (from The Gopher 1951)

Perhaps the promised “audits” by the University completed. For under the leadership of Wilbur Bennington, the Students’ Co-operative appears as a Student Group of the University for the first time, with the following description:

Classification: Enterprise

Description: This group of men students is a corporation in which all members hold at least one share of common stock. Each holder of common stock receiving services or commodities from the association shall also be a member. The purpose of this association is to furnish lodging, board and other services for its members.

Directory of Student Organizations, 1948-1949

1949

This year in the Directory of Student Organizations, 1949-1950 we learn how the co-op envisioned its relationship to the University as well as its leadership, meeting frequency and how to join:

President: D. A. Juers
Secretary: G. E. Michaelson
Business Manager: A. D. Flint
Purpose: To supply room and-board for male students of the University.
Membership: Members are elected to the house by the Board of Directors. Apply to the Business Manager.
Meetings: First Tuesday of each month at 1721 University S.E.

We have pictures of members Wes Borgeson (left)
and Rodney E. Anderson (right).

We have pictures of Howard L. Paulsen (left)
and John H. Longley (right).

It’s also likely that the character on the left helping toss Kay into a pool is co-oper Howard Lambert.

Interestingly, in the same The Gopher we learn of a LEILA J. EHRENSTROM (B.S. in Public Health Nursing) who, while not specified as a member of Amigo Club, belongs to Campus Nurses Club, Winchell Cottages Board and a “Student Co-op Council” — a name highly associated with those in charge of leading co-operative housing expansion for women’s and maybe men’s co-ops as well.
