This year more sportsmen spent time at the house, before leaving for greener pastures (and athletic success). We’ve already established that Howard Lambert was a swimmer. Willis J. Wood was a heavy-weight wrestler. John C. Wallfred and Ken McGonagle were baseballers.

Philip Marbut Moomaw was President of the Co-op, but joined the Korean war and became an army captain. He did not die in the war, he married another in the military and they went on to live in Missouri.

We also have images of some co-opers.

Another sport is added to the co-op’s “collection” with Jerry Helgeson’s participation in college football.

Meanwhile, agriculture continues to demonstrate a strong grip on the co-op as well.

The co-op enjoys the company of the 6’10” tall b-baller “Big Bill” Simonovich for a couple years starting in ’52.

Serious concentration by Bill “Boots” Simonovich brought fruitful results this year. He averaged 15.3 points for 22 games, while grabbing 240 rebounds.

David W. Fagerness resigned as Vice President of the Junior Cabinet, a political student group. He apparently knew his way around baskets as well while living at the Amigo Club, as he was snapped in The Gopher 1952 helping lift someone credited as his teammate Big Ed Kalafat.

It must have been easier for Sports Reporter Dwayne A. Netland to get scoops directly from the kitchen of the house where all those athletes lived with him!

The co-op also enjoyed the company of Don Kieffer, who eventually credited it as “Amigo Club” in his year book accomplishments list. Perhaps he had fond memories of the place, as many of us do.

Norwegian student Torje Torjerson also lived in the house this year.

1953

According to the Directory of Student Organizations, 1953–1954 aforementioned batter Mr. John Wallfred served as President of the house and Harold Strom served as some kind of “advisor” role, which may have something to do with alumni relations.

Co-oper Wayne Thomas Fix, a basketballer on full scholarship, lived in the house this year, then stayed in Minneapolis working at General Electric before developing several companies, traveling in Asia and marrying.

Co-opers didn’t slouch in scholarly pursuits, either. John Tomsich lived here before moving on to Phi Sigma Kappa and becoming editor of the Minnesota Daily from 1956–57. In 1963, he earned a PhD from the University of Wisconsin and continued studying and teaching in academics for years to come.

In the apparently traditional manner of younger students spending time at the co-op before joining a fraternity house, Werner A. Traxel started living here for a couple years before participating in “Pershing Rifles-Scabbard & Blade” functions, a military crowd; Joseph L. Ward lived here a couple years then got initiated to Phi Kappa; and Gordon D. Goick joined the house for just a year before finding a home in Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Even though it’s tricky to research names like “Johnson” it seems a number continued appearing to join but are not depicted in the year books. Another Hawaiian joined while attending industrial business school at the university, while a possibly unrelated person with the same last name lived elsewhere on campus going to dental school, and both are depicted eventually in the 1957 year book.

In the Directory of Student Organizations, 1954–1955 we learn a list of Committees from this document and that elections are held in April:

The Board: executive committee for the cooperative
Recreation: plans the line-ups and Intramural games
Social: plans the all-house parties and events

More sports successes were on the lips of the housemates as their fellow co-oper Eugene (“Gene”) Steiger, a baseball catcher and also wrestler, actually had a high batting average for the baseball team. Though, he sadly missed the final with a hand injury.

According to a conversation I had with later co-oper Roger J. Illies (pronounced Ihl’-ee-uhs), his older brother lived at the house and was captain of the boxing team during this time. However, the next year someone was hit so hard in the ring they were permanently injured, almost died, and then “they dropped boxing” from the official sports.

Perry T. Torvik and younger brother Douglas E. Torvik (sons of Ruth Torvik of Fairmont) lived at the Amigo Club while a seemingly related Peter J. with the same last name (from Underwood) lived elsewhere on campus. In the 1959 yearbook, the two that lived at the co-op might be depicted in different fraternities.

… or Perry is Peter. Or these are all just Peter J. Torvik in three or four places at once. I wonder if it’s families like the Torviks that inspired future volumes to more frequently list first names.

Other co-opers who lived at the house were a mining and geology specialist, and of course an agriculturalist — the founding science that hadn’t left the house through all the sporting — who lived in the house a few years.

Quite a few residents stayed on through this year. Not much is known about most of the new people listed. It seems family names can be found in typical academic-, sporting- and maybe even occasionally ROTC-sort of environments. And co-opers continued to live cooperatively while also joining sports teams or fraternities. I did find:

Cabak went on to become a Captain in the Air Force, developer of the face of Silicon Valley and philanthropist.

But an increasing number do not appear in year books this year or for several years after, as if they did not graduate in Minnesota if at all. It’s as though they are at the house for a flash of something, and then depart. Is this a sign of increased transience? Counter-culture seeping into tradition? More marriages? Entrepreneurship?

It’s likely that Mr. Scheff was Dean Fredrick Scheff, who like many at the time joined the Air Force and developed an early word processor in 1971. Charles Krump may also have joined the Air Force and gone into education. William Berge appears to have been a private man after serving as a Navy radio technician, and enjoyed nature, hiking and duck hunting.

All I found about the house President George P. Morgan is that he was in veterinary medicine in a class that was 80% married before leaving school, and he likely graduated in 1958. It is difficult to say without truly speaking with people who lived there at the time, or shortly after, with some institutional knowledge of the mid-50s.
