1960

The Gopher ceased publications for the most part in 1966, so that is the most immediate limitation we have in decrypting the increasingly unclear 1960s. When did the house change from a men-only fraternity-, military-, sports- and agriculture-centric household to the co-ed and more diverse co-op of today?
In case it wasn’t clear from previous volumes regarding the Fraternity Purchasing Association, it’s explicitly stated in The Gopher 1961 that:
Most of the members of FPA are the greek letter organizations and the co-op eating clubs.
— p351, The Gopher, Volume 74, 1961
In contrast to the 1940s, The Students’ Co-op has been reduced in University reputation from a proud founder of NASCL to “one of the eating co-ops” during the 1950s. Street-rep is hard to “timeline” but it seems somehow appropriate for our chaotically managed house. Still, in its own mind it remained a hot spot and a bargain:

Over half the people listed this year appear to have stayed in the house since 1959 or earlier: Barrick, Buscher, Daml, Knutson, Kubesh, Lacher, Lindskog, McConnell, Mittelstadt, Nistler, Olson and Winter. Patrick J. Morgan who first moved in 1951 may have even returned again for the second time, giving him a decade-long history with the house.
Elected officials included:
President: Raymond Knutson
Vice President: Lynn Winter
Secretary: Roger Butalla
Treasurer: Jerome Daml
—Directory of Student Organizations, 1960-1961
Here are some of the new members that joined in 1960:

Delta Kappa Phi

Many co-opers stayed on a year. We have a Representative/President to the University in member Laurence Arthur Winter.
Vice President: Wade Heims
Secretary: Douglas Veum
Mgr: Jerome Daml
—Directory of Student Organizations, 1961-1962
It’s unclear what the cryptic “Mgr” means, but it was probably “Business Manager”, which has at times been synonymous with a compensated role of Treasurer/Financial Manager reporting finances to sponsor Midland, Co-operatives.

We have some pictures from 1961, including a picture of Raymond Vance Knutson and a picture of Gordon Lees Thurston and an unnamed friend, courtesy Jerry (Jerome) Daml.
Joseph Leon Van Wiel joined in 1961 but he and two others pictured on the same yearbook page would join him at the co-op the following year …
1962
President: Arthur Fellerman
Vice President: Dick Lacher
Secretary: Dale Ranta
—Directory of Student Organizations, 1962-1963
New co-opers appear:

Jim Stordahl was one of the two Stordahl brothers that played for The Gophers hockey team. He is credited with 13 goals plus 8 goal assists The Gopher 1962 found worthy of mention. For more hockey pictures of the Stordahls, I recommend the 1962-1964 yearbooks.

President: [Everett] Grant Leff
Business Manager: David Sundberg
Adv: Philip Nistler
— Directory of Students Groups 1963-1964
Elections are listed as April, 1963. This may explain Ranta’s brother (also Ranta) later credited as the President. “Adv” could mean student/alumni advisor, since Nistler is not listed as a resident or a student. Was Nistler staying on beyond official student status? This could be more evidence that the co-op was disregarding official University expectations of student housing and exercising its autonomy to choose its own membership, unlike the recently demolished Winchell Women’s Cooperative Cottages.
It should be noted that “University Village Cooperative Association, Incorporated” is listed as “(inactive)”. Was this the women’s “cooperative cottages” from the 1930s-1950s? If so, it would create even more pressure on the Amigo Club to realize its privilege as a male-only co-op.

This may be only tangential but M.D. Zeddies is shown here (standing on the left) in the meeting to merge Midland Cooperatives with Central Cooperative, Inc. (CCI).

Hugh Bonner (above, maybe of Sigma Alpha Mu) appears to be one of the last co-opers to join that also appeared in The Gopher (1966). I couldn’t confirm more pictures of co-opers living here in 1964 but William Walte Andrusco (from Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada) and Stephen Earl Anderson (from San Francisco) both joined the University, and stayed at the co-op while studying Arts.

Treasurer stayed on this time, always a wise move for the shifty co-op.

Bearded Psychologist
This may be the last to join The Students’ Co-operative that also appeared in the penultimate The Gopher (Volume 80, 1966-1967). Appropriately, he sets a new record for photographed facial hair.
1967
This year only one name appears in the Directory of Student Organizations, a “SAB” (Student Advisory Board?) “Adv” (Advisor?) Bernard Coleman, with phone number 373-4158.
Bernard Malloy Coleman (a roughly 43-year-old graduate student from Birmingham, Alabama) does not list his residence at the house.
1968
The American Indian Movement formed this year in Minneapolis, leading to greater pressures on colonizers to recognize the stolen land situation. Black students occupied Morrill Hall, a building named for the act that violently pushed Dakota even further from their homelands. Protests against the seemingly endless Viet Nam war erupted.
Also, by 1968, NASCO was founded, superseding NASCL (of which the house was a charter member) and this formed much more explicit goals of egalitarianism in co-operatives around the country.
By 1975 the two first women would register the house as their address; by the late 1970s, we would see a population of one woman for every two men, or so. In the next decades should we be able to document some kind of clue to how this cultural shift took place? This year of intense music, drugs, sexual freedoms, struggles, losses and activism would be a logical “snapping point” for many inequities and tensions that had been building for centuries.
1969
This was arguably the year that a national “awakening” hit just about every corner of America, with pacifists getting wide news coverage, civil rights taking even more national stages, and beatniks and hippies in full swing. The relatively conservative Students’ Co-op must have seemed like an anochronism to some or a haven to others. We know the house protected protestors that at least sympathized with those that tore down the fence in front of the ROTC/SATC across the street.
We heard from Captain Tony, a wanderer and sometimes applicant to the house, that the government set up a helipad near the McDonald’s in Dinkytown, from which helicopters launched to gas protestors in the streets. He told me that his mother would hang out at the house, kind of living there, but probably only in the capacity permitted.
In the Directory of Student Organizations 1969-1970 The Students’ Co-op merely lists a contact number: 331-1708.

*This might count as the last year the co-op is registered as “Amigo Club”. After this, the U of M Directories dispensed with manual address format and forced things into a more number data-like spreadsheet format, which would it seems eliminate “pet names” for residences.

Does the low listed population reflect neglect to register? Different demands or benefits for members, such as no “doubling up”? Does it indicate a number of others living with these men unofficially? Perhaps a number of women?
