Co-oper Patrick J. Morgan started appearing in the directories since 1951, and he “returned” to the house in this year. Co-oper Mr. Robert A. Strom (not to be confused with earlier co-oper Ronald A. Strom) may have been a Co-op representative on the FPA board, which Students’ Co-op members participated in running.

James Cabak (brother of previous resident Michael Cabak) moved in and lived here a couple years, before leaving to become president of the Chi Phi frat. And Edward H. Opitz joined Sigma Chi, a fraternity known for its themed parties.

Resident of the previous year James A. Moses of Elmore, Minnesota rose to the occasion of president of the house, before moving out to Marcy Holmes neighborhood the next year. He continued to attend University for a few years. The next president was Tom Wallfred, the baseball player who had already been in the role a few years prior. Co-oper Will F. Personius was a member of the Minnesota Men’s Residence Association, welcoming and helping freshmen to find and settle in their new digs. Co-oper Wallace Smith appeared, joined the football marching band and studied anthropology.

In the Fall of this year, while rooming in the house was scarce, future Treasurer Jerome (Jerry) Daml was offered a cot in the storage area by the boiler, where they kept soda pop for their vending machine. Being desperate for accommodations, he accepted, but the following year after some G.I.s moved out of the house, he would be promoted to join everyone else in the dormitory area (group sleeping quarters on the third floor).

Roger Illies moved in because his brother had lived there in the early 50s. In my conversation with Mr. Illies, he reports that the feeling now, even if there were still some sportsmen, was “the athletes had moved out” and there were even a couple people living at the house that were not students. He also recalls the house cook (working Monday-through-Friday) was named Nettie Jorgenson and everyone gained weight on her delicious food. Jerry Daml reports the menu frequently consisted of delicious buttered rolls, chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy.
Roger shortly transferred from the U to follow a football career so only ended up staying in the house for a quarter.
In The Gopher 1963 it was specified that the first co-educational (i.e.; co-gendered) residence was Bailey Hall, and an earlier volume claims it was established 3 years prior, indicating that the sexual norms were shifting in this 1957-1958 academic year.
The coed lounge in Bailey Hall was the scene of their Christmas party. Bailey Hall, coeducational dormitory on the St. Paul campus, is now three years old. The coed system has worked out well and is satisfactory to the 299 residents. Women occupy the north wing, men the east. The dining room and lounge are coed. Exchanges between corridors in opposite wings are held occasionally. Each corridor in Bailey has its own governmental body. The president of each of these groups serves on the executive board of the entire hall. The executive board then elects its own officers, including social and activities committee chairmen. Bailey has many social events during the year. A special Christmas open house was held on December 4. President O. Meredith Wilson, deans from several of the colleges and parents of Bailey residents attended the event. The terrace of the men’s east wing is a very busy place in nice weather.
A number of co-opers stayed on this year and we still don’t know much more about them. Co-oper Leonard R. Zetah became a teacher. Co-oper Ron Fleischer studied sociology. Co-oper Richard R. Grosgebauer went into political science.

Research of this era gets even more fuzzy with the poor organization style of The Gopher, the accelerating growth of university class sizes, and the increasing frequency of names like Anderson, Hansen, Hanson, Jensen, Lund and Ploof (well, okay printing specialist Kenneth Jerome “Ken” Ploof of Bird Island stands out, even though we don’t have pictures of him from the era).
1958
A thing that may be noted in this year’s Directory of Student Organizations is that membership appears to “expand” marginally from all the “good” qualifiers:
Supplies room and board for male students.
Membership: Any male student may apply.
Also listed are Charles F. Kubesh as President (who Jerry Daml says was a Veterinary student), Tom Walfred as Vice President, and in the role of Secretary was Jerry Mittelstadt.
We do have imagery of Lee Roy Brandt, another baseball player who moved in and credited his location as “Amigo Club”, though after ’58 he moved to Centennial Hall.
While I cannot find yearbook photos of men with the unique names Munzenrieder, Stephani, Panushka, Daml, Butalla, Rodenz or Mateffy (though a Miss Mateffy graduated) evidence supports a decline in sports interest at the house. What would replace this interest? Probably academics, society and other things.

The following year, registration to the address dropped to 24 members, the lowest in its history with the university directories. However, unlisted members may include Harry Geifols [sic?] and Walt Heines, whom Jerry knew as career men, the former working for — and pushing $1-a-share stock in — Control Data Corporation developing earliest transistor computer technology that gave IBM a run for its buy-out money.
1959
In the spring quarter of 1959, President of the University James Lewis Morrill had the women’s Winchell Cooperative Cottages demolished. After 45 years of academic prowess, evolution, struggles, praise from several (other) University Presidents and moving subject to the University’s whims, 136 co-oper positions were suddenly over. They have not be sponsored again to this day.
Students became more aware of their student government and in 1959 created the Minnesota Student Association to take the place of the old All University Congress.

Some Mr. Thomas J. Lindskog was president of our house, apparently. The Directory of Student Organizations, 1959-1960 gives us mostly familiar names of other co-op officials from early 1959:

Treasurer: Jerry Daml
And we had these characters move in.

While Jerry Daml was business manager (Treasurer), he said the house only had to evict two people for lack of payments: their friend Jim Chelberg and Byron Panushka. Jim Chelberg later got his affairs in order and returned to the house.
After this, registered membership no longer fluctuates between the high population of 28-38 members in the U of M directories. I believe it is safe to speculate that the lower reported population in the following decade, starting in 1959-1960, could reflect more members using home addresses or not registering as students. I have no proof that it reflects “hidden” members such as female partners of the officially male-only membership, but we know that some non-students lived at the house.
